A Tribute to my Granddad

Hello you!

Thanks for your lovely thoughts on my granddad's passing. I felt very touched and it's nice to know you are thinking about me and my family! This blog post will be rather short as life is pretty busy at the moment... The funeral will be next week.

My Granddad on his 100th birthday
I was going to talk about the new blanket I am making but the weather is soo off, I couldn't take decent pictures. So you will get to see the new blanket next week. Fingers crossed for better weather.

I hope you won't mind that I will talk about my Opa - my granddad - instead. He died this Tuesday aged 101 years. 101! Can you believe it? He was very lucky and got to live at home with my granny until about three months ago when he couldn't walk anymore and needed more help. He was pretty fit until his 100th birthday - lucky him! And lucky me because I got to have him as my granddad for so long.

He was very strong minded and loved his family a lot. Married to my granny for 66 years... I was close to him because we both enjoyed to travel and see the world. That, and we shared the same kind of humour. :-) I will miss him a lot but he was at peace in the end and I am glad, he didn't have to suffer long.

As you might remember I made him a lap blanket for his 100th birthday. The blanket got used daily because it seemed to be the perfect size! I was glad to hear that because I was worried it would be to small at first. The blanket will be buried with him and I am happy with that. Makes me feel honoured and close to him. That said - I had to promise my granny to make her another blanket because apparently she became quite attached to it too!

So 2015 will be a year of blankets... I will finish my dad's blanket soon, need to start on my granny's one plus I have three pregnant friends whom I promised a blanket. Any suggestions for patterns? I would like to make different ones, so I won't get bored...

Have a wonderful weekend with lots of yarn and love!

Take care

  1. I'm really sorry for your loss, Anne. I've been going through the loss of a friend recently so I feel even nearer to you and your family. I'm sure your grand-dad will stay with you in some way, though - and, what a nice old man he was, can't believe he was 100 yo in that picture!

  2. Sending comfort and prayers for you and your family. 101 is a fantastic innings and how wonderful that he remained fit for so long. 2015 must definitely be the year for blankets - Michelle's Bargello blanket is magnificent, and I have two blankets in my queue. This week I began a baby blanket called "Farm Fresh" by Candi Jensen and I would also like to do Sólás Caomh by Jodi Euchner but I need to work out which yarn to use, trying to work through my stash instead of buying new yarn. Candi Jensen has a book full of baby blanket ideas called Candy Blankies. Here are the Ravelry pattern links to the blankets mentioned above:
Wishing you some inspiration for different blankets - textured, motif, applique, stripes, square, round... one can never be bored with crochet! Good luck and all the best to you and your family at this difficult time. Hugs xxx

  3. Hi Anne, thinking of you at this sad time. What an amazing life he must have had, I hope your granny and the rest of the family are holding up ok. Good luck with the blankets, looking forward to seeing them on here :) xx

    1. Hi Anne. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Dad very suddenly last year, it leaves such a big hole. Maybe you can find comfort in doing your grannies blanket. As far as suggestions for patterns goes, how about a sampler blanket. I did this for my daughter. I used 3 colours, found lots of interesting stitches I wanted to learn and did 2 or 3 rows of each using a different colour, each time I changed stitch.?

  4. Hello Anne! What a touching post! Your granddad sounds lovely! I'm sure you will miss him, but you were lucky that he lived this long! I lost mine when I was still quite young.
    Take care!
    Ingrid xx

  5. Oh I send to you all of my best regards .... I'm really sorry !! Whata sadness and what his life !!! Hugs ...

  6. I'm so sorry to hear of your granddad's passing. How wonderful that you had him in your life for so long, and that he stayed so fit (I only knew one of my grandparents, as the other three had died before I was born). I'm sure that your crocheted blanket will bring your granny a lot of comfort, and I send you and your family my best wishes :)
    Cathy x

  7. Oh Anne I have just read this-I am truly sorry to hear that you have lost your wonderful Opa. What an amazing age and what a full lifetime of experience. He must have so enjoyed seeing you grow up-what stories he must have had to tell! Thinking of you and your family xx

  8. Sorry to hear about your granddad. It's lovely that his blanket will be buried with him. It makes blanket making very special.
